About this site

This site was created in March/April 2004. The idea for the site came from bostonconcerts.com -- a great, simple, clean single-page events listing for Boston in the USA. The beauty of the format is in its simplicity; there is only one page on the site, each event is listed on a single line with just the bare minimum (but essential) information. There is no clutter, hardly any images, and no promotional agenda involved.

CorkGigs.com came about because of the lack of such an online events listing for Cork. Previously there were a few places to source information about gigs in town on the internet. The Freakscene talk page gigs/events section has notices and discussion of some of the more alternative gigs in Cork and elsewhere. The langers at People's Republic Of Cork have an events guide, sponsored by Murphys, which also features in the Echo's 'Downtown' section every Thursday. Unfortunately as they rely on random punters and gig/venue promoters to submit events to the guide, some gigs are missed, while others receive inordinately high profiles. The music forum on the PROC can be a great source of information and opinion on Cork's music scene.

Jim's site www.zeitgeist-ireland.com has some great in-depth concert/band/artist information, and to its credit, you can browse through the listings by day of the week or even by event type. However, it's fairly time consuming to trawl through each day's events -- if all you want to do is check what's happening in town for the next 2 months, then by the time you've read it all you've forgotten half of it. Plus it's a damn sight easier to punch in corkgigs.com on a keyboard after a few pints!

Anyway, this site wasn't created with the intention of replacing or competing with those mentioned above. Rather it's just a simple reference point to see what's going on in town and around, without all the noise and clutter. You can still refer to those other sites for more detailed info.
