Press Release:

Cork Opera House Proudly Presents

THE REICH EFFECT
A Five Day Festival Marking the 75th Year of
Pulitzer Prize Winning Composer, Steve Reich
Wednesday 27 – Sunday 31 July 2011

FESTIVAL HOT TICKET ALERT

Cork Opera House is proud to present The Reich Effect a five day festival marking the 75th year of the Pulitzer Prize winning composer, Steve Reich. A multitude of performances including the Irish premiere of WTC 9/11 by the Kronos Quartet will take place in Cork Opera House and other Cork City venues from Wednesday 27 through Sunday 31 July. In order to celebrate this seminal event we are offering an exclusive FESTIVAL TICKET for a limited timeframe only. The FESTIVAL TICKET is a special package of 5 for €100 (any 5 festival events of your choice). Book now to avoid disappointment by calling Cork Opera House Box Office on 021-4270022.

The New York Times calls Steve Reich “our greatest living composer” and “among the great composers of the century”, while The New Yorker hails him as “the most original musical thinker of our time”. From his early taped speech pieces to his digital video opera, the American’s path has embraced not only aspects of Western Classical music, but the structures, harmonies, and rhythms of non-Western and American vernacular music, particularly jazz.

The Reich Effect will begin with a screening of the film Steve Reich – Phase to Face followed by a public interview with Reich conducted by John Kelly on 27 July in Cork Opera House. Other highlights include the Kronos Quartet (28 July, Cork Opera House), RTÉ Concert Orchestra performing works by Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead) and Kjartan Sveinsson (Sigur Ros) (29 July, City Hall), London Sinfonietta (30 July, Cork Opera House), Efterklang with Daniel Bjarnason and the Messing Orchestra (30 July, Savoy Theatre), Johann Johannsson (31 July, Triskel Christchurch) and Crash Ensemble with Iarla Ó Lionáird and Gavin Friday (31 July, Cork Opera House).

Crash Ensemble will perform Double Sextet for which Steve Reich was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2009.

Local, national and international artists will come together to produce three special programmes of Reich’s music: Counterpoint, Drumming and Phases. These will include two unique dance commissions. David Bolger will dance to Kate Ellis’s Cello Counterpoint and Nic Gaireiss will dance Clapping Music. Both events take place in the Firkin Crane.

The Reich Effect is curated by Mary Hickson, Cork Opera House Chief Executive Officer, and the prize-winning cellist, chamber musician, and musician-in-residence in Cork Opera House, Kate Ellis.

Upon announcing The Reich Effect, Hickson said:

“It is such an honour to present musicians and composers of this calibre in Cork City. It is a wonderful opportunity for Cork to celebrate local talent also. I have always been hugely ‘effected’ by Reich myself since my time studying Music at UCC and it is a real privilege to invite him to Cork. Kate Ellis and I had great fun and deliberation selecting the programme for the festival and we look forward to your reaction and enjoyment over the few days in Cork!”

Budding electronic artists are invited to apply to the Reich Remix Competition. The finalists will be judged and selected by Steve Reich himself, having been shortlisted by a panel of high profile judges including Jim Carroll and Donal Dineen. Reich will also lead a Composition Seminar (places strictly by application).

Other events in Cork Opera House, City Hall, Firkin Crane, Pavilion and Savoy Theatre are currently on sale through Cork Opera House. More events in a variety of venues and outdoor sites will be announced.

Freakscene will set a new record for Ireland’s longest running club-night when it celebrates its 15th Birthday on March 11th.

Six up-and-coming bands have been invited to perform on the night. Though all of them (bar one, Assassins are a side project of a number of original Cork bands)) write their own material, the bands will be performing covers of their favourite Freakscene tunes on the night as well as a couple of their own songs so they get to showcase what they are about, as well as guaranteeing to rock the house for Freakscene’s 15th!

Hope Is Noise

Hope is Noise were formed in late 2004 from the ashes of other musical adventures. Their recorded output includes 2 EPs “Words to burn you” (2005) ‘The Worm Has Turned’ (2006) and an album ‘Applaud Friends, The Comedy Is Over’ (2007), which has received much critical praise. Live performances have also attracted much attention as Hope is Noise have played extensively across Ireland as well as Europe and the west coast of America. They are currently getting ready to record their second album.
Hope is Noise is made up of four school friends who have been playing together in different bands for over 12 years. We jam, record and play live for the nothing more than the sheer enjoyment music gives us. Life should not just be a nine to five job.

See ‘Hope Is Noise’ rocking California 2 years ago! Great song, brilliant performance!

The Brad Pitt Light Orchestra

The music of the indefinable Limerick phenomenon that is The Brad Pitt Light Orchestra’s features a blend of warm vocal harmonies, classy instrumentation and ear-catching melodies. They are desperately hard to categorise yet strangely easy to love. Seeing them live has been described by one bystander (randomly chosen) as a vibrant, life-affirming experience.

‘The Brad Pitt Light Orchestra are a seven-member band from all corners of Ireland, none of them named Brad. They cleverly released a beautiful festive song called December in time for Christmas, which I compared to Arcade Fire. I predict good things for them in 2009.’

‘Enjoyable and uplifting!’

‘Best of the (Flatlake) fest, though, was Saturday’s late-night performance from The Brad Pitt Light Orchestra. They had us waltzing in the big top.’

When Good Pets Go Bad are a Cork based four piece influenced by bands such as Sonic Youth, The Pixies and The Rapture to name but a few!
When Good Pets Go Bad came onto the scene in Cork in July 2008 they lost four consecutive battle of the bands but despite this the group’s infamous ego has not been bruised, they have soldiered on, and continue to write their own unique brand of top class rock n’ roll! After playing support slots with the likes of Fred and Sultans of Ping, they have become the critic’s choice, some even going as far as to label the band as ‘grand like’. When Good Pets Go Bad are not a band to be missed!

Silo

“It’s punky, it’s raw, it’s honest, it’s not complicated. I love it to bits.”
– Cormac Battle on “Unlucky for Some”, 2fm (Feb ’09)

“… if they’d been around [Seattle] in the mid-’90s, Sub-Pop would’ve signed them in a heartbeat. Tight and turbulent, ‘Unlucky for Some’ has a dark, angsty, throw-yourself-around-the-room energy.”
– Olaf Tyaransen, Hot Press (Jan ’09)

“… full of energy and attitude”
– Jackie Hayden, Hot Press (Dec ’08)

“…I’m glad this band was brought to my attention. They are the best Irish band I have heard since I laid ears on Berkeley a few years ago, who coincidentally share a similar ’90s post-indie rock sound as Silo. Just because you don’t live in Ireland, that is no excuse not to support this band… rating 5/5″
– www.siczine.com (Nov ’08)

“Silo are very good at what they do – it is loud, it is pumping and it is full, oh so full of angst … their popularity is more than justified”
– www.redtrackmusic.com (Oct ’08)

Silo are a four-piece alternative rock band from Cork, Ireland. Since forming in 2001 the band have gone through numerous line-up changes, seeing them develop musically into one of Cork’s premier original acts. The current line up, which has been intact since the summer of 2007, brought brothers Shane and Cian O’Leary together with original members Philip Murphy and Eoin Ryan.

Since this union, the band has taken leaps and bounds developing their sound into a rocking yet melodic force. Not only have Silo played extensively throughout Ireland but they have also been invited to showcase their music in London by management companies and record labels.

An early demo saw the band being picked for the National Student Music Awards in 2008. Later in 2008 the band recorded and released their debut single “Unlucky for Some” to a vibrant reaction from the Cork music scene and 2009 will see the band attempt to build on this success throughout the rest of the country.

The band were “Pick of the Fortnight” in Jackie Hayden’s First Cuts column in Hot Press for the same single which led to it receiving regular airplay on most of Ireland’s radio stations. The single also received an extremely positive review in the following issue of the magazine.

Silo recorded a live session for Cormac Battle’s 2fm show in early 2009 which was featured last Sunday, showcasing some brand new material which will be featured on their upcoming debut album. Work on said album is heavily underway and the band
is booked in to begin recording in July 2009.

I’ll Eat Your Face arrived from planet Cans to entertain and irritate with their short, fast songs and even shorter and faster pants. By mixing the sounds of a kango-hammer and a man shouting over a cartoon, IEYF are the ideal way to start any night of disgraceful debauchery and good-time lunacy with their succulent nonsense. I’ll Eat Your Face intend to IMPREGNATE the WORLD with their DIABOLICAL GUFF.

“I’ll Eat Your Face are anything but a rational band, and more a primal force of nature”

Assassins

Assassins will take no prisoners on March 11th with a carefully chosen set of Electronica, Rock and Industrial
Freakscene classics from artists such as Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumkins, Muse, Pendulum etc.

Assassins are a Cork supergroup of sorts made up of members from bands such as Echogram, Carbon Copy, Alterosa and My Evil Ex! The band came together especially for the Freakscene birthday party, 3 of the bands have previously played Freakscene Lives. So Assassins know what they are about and will complete their mission to to bash out an explosive set that will rock Freakscene!

Ronan McGrath and Conor MacSweeny bring the hard electronic rock sound of Echogram to the mix while Cormac O’Regan and Jenny Judge add the unique sonic textures of Alterosa. Cian MacSweeny (Carbon Copy) will drive out vocals and guitars through this eclectic mix of musicians and styles.
Assassins are coming!

Irish by birth, Cork by the grace of God. How better to repay the favour than make heavenly music.

Cork Rock musicians have high hopes, dreams and aspirations. They work by day and play by night. They rock till their fingers bleed in dark pub corners; they practice in cold steel containers on the banks of the Lee. They travel to far-off gigs in clapped-out vans beneath their amps and drums; they knock on closed record company doors. Some write songs to banish the blues, others sing to exorcise their souls. The cynical ones are tempted to conform to the musical tastes of teenage girls. Some would rather bow out than sell out. The rest are content just to play, to be part of something unique, to Rock with their Cork Out.

This film takes the temperature of the Cork Rock scene by talking to the people who actually make it happen.

Why is it that the current crop of Cork musicians has struggled to find an audience to rival their counterparts in Europe and closer to home? Do music venues meet the high standards we set ourselves in other areas? Is Cork pride damaging our chances of winning over the people who decide what we hear on the radio? Can modest profits from song downloads and CDs sold at gigs sustain an already under-resourced group? Do we really believe that a band’s first big break depends on geography? Why don’t we have a permanent world-class concert venue? Are we expecting too much? Do the powers-that-be even know we exist?

The music is loud and the language is sometimes colourful but the sentiments expressed in the film are as genuine as the music that inspired us to make it.

One thing is for certain; if you enjoy live music and find yourself in Cork with nothing to do, there will be a band playing somewhere in the city that you will love. For all the obstacles that bands face, they can be content in the knowledge that a lack of talent, diversity or passion is not one of them.

The programme for the Cork Midsummer Festival was launched on Tuesday last in the Bodega. The festival, which runs from Tuesday 19th – Saturday 30th June, will this year feature, among other highlights, the biggest Spiegeltent line-up yet.

The latest Drop-D.ie gig took place in Cyprus Avenue on Tuesday last, featuring The Spikes, Fight Like Apes and Sideproject.
No review for the moment, but here’s a few video clips from the gig:

Fight Like Apes

The Spikes:

THE SPIKES

Since the successful debut single release of ‘Monster’ in July, The Spikes followed up with the critically acclaimed, ‘In Love No More’ in November. They are now set for their most daring release to date with ‘Ninja Girlfriend’. The Spikes have successfully set about re-establishing the niche for the rock ‘n’ roll four-piece.
With three singles under their belt The Spikes are not to be taken lightly, their live show has been turning heads since they began over a year and a half ago. Frontman Tom Dunne is the epitome of their live energy roaming around onstage with a performance that is guaranteed to entertain. Tom Dunne delivers not only the outfit’s drive but ‘a vocal performance that puts one in mind of a stripped-down The Zutons, with more than a hint of Joy Division.’ – Hotpress. With each member coming together after different experiences they are one of the most polished bands you will see, as The Irish Times have noted, ‘The Spikes…show the rest how it’s done’!
The Spikes return to Cork for their second Drop-D show as well as playing in the Old Oak last November.

www.myspace.com/thespikesmusic

FIGHT LIKE APES

After a hugely successful Drop-D gig in February, which marked their first Cork gig, Fight Like Apes will return to many a new fan. Their high energy and vocal performance simply cannot be missed. “Giving us a quirky new-wave punk with equal cut of humour and aggression, Fight Like Apes are emerging with tempestuously bolstered songs built on synth and digitised fuzz over driving bass lines and tight punk beats, and are easily one of the most promising punk bands to come out of Dublin for quite some time” – www.frequency-ireland.blogspot.com. Singer MayK runs the show in a manic fashion as she roams around stage as if crazed; “the moment lead vocalist MayKay opens her mouth we knew we were in for quite a ride. Fight Like Apes smack you so hard in the kidneys that your jaw drops to the floor and eyes bulge in amazement” – Drop-D.ie
The band were recently awarded, along with Duke Special and The Frames, the opportunity of having their video for Lend Me Your Face made courtesy of the students of The Tisch School of Arts in New York. Surely, even after a short period of time together, Fight Like Apes are going places.

www.myspace.com/fightlikeapesmusic

SIDEPROJECT

Cork progressive rockers Sideproject launched their debut EP Take Shelter From The Stars just two months ago to a packed Cyprus Avenue. This is no mean feat on it’s own but if you consider the fact that Murphy’s Live was full to capacity in An Bróg then it is exceptional. Take Shelter From The Stars was recorded with Ross O’Donovan (Waiting Room’s Catering for Headphones, Ten Past Seven’s Shut Up Your Face and Cars in Wall’s Seven Cars In A Room) and mastered in Suite Studios in Dublin (Muse, JJ72, Frames). Sideproject then went on to support Rest for their album launch in Cork and Galway to sell out crowds.
While leaning heavily on influences such as Biffy Clyro and Mogwai there is a considerable instrumental vibe carried throughout. The band seem on the fastrack to success; “If the songs on their debut EP Take Shelter From The Stars are anything to go by, Sideproject could well be one of the success stories of 2007.” – Downtown.
Vocalist Tom Kavanagh nurtures a sweet rock based voice and delivers the quiet/loud vocals exquisitely. The dynamic they have in their line-up shows there is a lot going on with Sideproject; “a band with a firm grasp on the quiet/loud dynamics laid-out by the indie rock fraternity yet also tilts their collective hat towards slow-burning post-rock overtones aswell as offering impassioned vocals” – Cork Independent.

THE SULTANS OF PING RETURN

A HISTORY LESSON

The Sultans Of Ping FC start in early 1989.Their first demo is recorded in 1990 and includes “Where’s Me Jumper”.They headline Eurorock 1990 as the token local crowd pulling band. Ian Wilson, producer of the Dave Fanning show on RTE, loves the show and offers them their first radio session. In June 1991 the Sultans are again invited to be the closing headline act, this time at the Cork Rocks Festival. Martin Heath of Rhythm King Records catches their set by accident and promptly offers them a deal. The band play their first UKshows in November 1991.

“Where’s Me Jumper” is released as a single in january 1992 and instantly becomes a cult classic. It becomes the biggest selling single of the year in Ireland beating off competition from Bryan Adams’ “Everything I Do”. The Sultans release two further singles that year “Stupid Kid” and “Veronica” which strengthens the band’s profile even more.

Their debut LP “Casual Sex In The Cineplex” comes out in January 1993 and crashes into the top 30 of the UK album charts. The fourth single “U Talk Too Much” also makes the top 30 singles charts. The Sultans spend most of the year touring in the UK, Ireland, Europe and Japan clocking up 150 shows during the year playing in places as diverse as Letterkenny and Hiroshima while still finding time to write their second LP. By this time the band have dropped the FC from their name in a bizarre attempt to be taken seriously. Three singles from the upcoming lp are released -”Teenage Punks”,”Wake Up And Scratch Me” and the classic “Michiko”.All make the top 75 of the UK singles charts.

The second LP “Teenage Drug” is released in 1994 but doesn’t have the same impact as their debut. The band decide to adopt a harder more American influenced sound and recruit Sammy Steiger (ex Golden Horde) to their ranks to beef up the guitar sound. The Sultans continue to tour incessantly to smaller but still enthusiastic audiences. In 1995 the “Of Ping” is quietly dropped from the name and the band are now just known as Sultans.

Third lp “Good Year For Trouble” arrives in 1996 but fails to sell well despite good reviews. The band are dropped by their record label and the writing seems to be on the wall. The Sultans get back to doing what they know best, playing live, and they set off around the UK, Ireland and Europe again. They support The Ramones on their last european tour as well as supporting The Sex Pistols in France.
1997 sees the band still on the road but starting to run out of steam. Their last show takes place in Cork in December 1997 and the night is ruined by aggressive bouncers who spend the evening attacking sultans fans. The band split up after the show.

THE PRESENT

The Sultans “Where’s Me Jumper” is voted 2nd best Irish song of all time by listeners to the Ian Dempsey show on Today Fm in 2004. The songs get played again on the radio and everyone wonders when the band will resurface. 8 years after their last show the Sultans return to the fold with some Irish shows in December 2005. Four original members remain – Niall O’Flaherty on vocals, Pat O’Connell on guitar, Morty McCarthy on drums,S ammy Steiger on lead guitar. They are joined by Ian Olney (ex Power Of Dreams) on bass who replaces Alan MacFeely.

2006 sees The Sultans continue to play sporadic gigs.Cherry Red Records will be releasing a DVD that captures the band playing live in front of their hometown audience in December 2005.
