The Lobby, for years a Cork live music institution, suddenly stopped hosting gigs in early 2005. The venue reopened its doors Mon 18th April 05 with gigs and sessions gracing the downstairs bar once again, but after one final concert on 31st July 05, The Lobby as we knew it was closed for good. The reason circulated at the time was that authorities were enforcing stricter fire safety regulations and as a result it would be uneconomical for the upstairs venue to continue. (Many have observed that you could almost jump from the window into the river Lee, while the city fire station is across the street.)

Regardless, we will remember the many great performances over the Lobby's 17 years of operation. Lobby Promotions occasionally put on gigs in other venues in Cork, and a CD containing tracks recorded in 2005 by dozens of Cork artists (in the final months of the Lobby's existence) is still avalable - see Magic Nights In The Lobby Bar.
